Snow Ice Cairn
#25. Bloom-a-Loom by LeeAnn Garrick. Description: I went back up to the place I made the other snow and ice sculptures in the afternoon and started to make the base of a cairn with ice. I didn’t take a torch with me and I had to give up when it was too dark to see. I chopped some more ice before going home ready for the morning. I hoped that the base would freeze and be strong. I returned before dawn to finish it off but now the ice had frozen solid and I couldn’t now dig any more out. How am I going to finish it now?! So instead I used frozen snow to build up the top which still lay on the grass around the ice. I didn’t intend to build a cone cairn exactly like Andy Goldsworthy’s but it just seemed to grow in that way. I can see why AG builds cones as it is a shape that just appears when you make it strong, a natural form that is inherent in the material. If you don’t know what I mean you’ll just have to build one! Desde la edad de 13 años, trabajó en granjas como jornalero. Se ha comparado la calidad repetitiva de las tareas de la granja a la rutina de hacer su escultura: “. Una gran parte de mi trabajo es como recoger patatas, hay que entrar en el ritmo de la misma” Goldsworthy estudió bellas artes en Bradford College of Art (1974-1975) y en Preston Politécnica (1975-1978) (en la actualidad la Universidad de Central Lancashire, recibiendo su Licenciatura en Artes (BA). Después de salir de la universidad, Goldsworthy vivió en Yorkshire, Lancashire y Cumbria. En 1985, se trasladó a Langholm en Dumfries y Galloway, Dumfriesshire, Escocia, y un año después a Penpont . Se ha dicho de que su giro gradual hacia el norte era “debido a la forma de vida sobre el que no tenía el control total”, pero que los factores contribuyentes fueron las oportunidades y deseos de trabajar en estas áreas y “razones de economía”. En 1982, se casó con Judith Goldsworthy Gregson. Tuvieron cuatro hijos y se establecieron en el pueblo de Penpont en la región de Dumfries y Galloway, Dumfriesshire, en el suroeste de Escocia. Ahora vive allí con su pareja, Tina Fiske, una historiadora de arte a la que conoció cuando ella vino a trabajar con él un par de años después de que se separó de su esposa. En 1993, recibió un doctorado honoris causa de la Universidad de Bradford. Actualmente es AD Profesor-At-Large en la Universidad de Cornell. Desde finales de los setenta Goldsworthy se ha dedicado casi exclusivamente al landart, ( arte terrenal) esto es, ha usado la propia naturaleza manipulada por él como obra de arte, manejando después, como testimonio, la fotografía realizada tras sus intervenciones, Goldsworthy es uno de los pocos artistas que no hace trabajar a otros sobre su proyecto en el paisaje sino que interviene con sus propias manos en actuaciones muy monumentales. Ha viajado mucho por America, Europa, Japon y Australia, el sentido del lugar es trascendental en sus obra, se podria decir que es lo mas importante, porque aunque sea de manera provisional su objetivo es modificar el entorno. Le interesa además la esencia cambiante del paisaje por la luz o el clima por ejemplo, los propios materiales de su obra también pueden ser afectados por el cambio, hielo, arena, hojas o nieve son algunos de sus materiales favoritos, la mayoria de sus esculturas tienen que ser realizadas y documentadas en el mismo dia por su caracter efímero, a veces no solo en el mismo día sino en el fugaz instante en que la obra “tiene lugar” como cuando fotografía agua o arena lanzada en el aire, de modo que su obra tiene también algo de action art. La inestabilidad de la naturaleza es su mayor atractivo tanto en los colores como en las formas, Goldsworthy es famoso por sus actuaciones con formas constantemente presentes en la naturaleza pero a nivel molecular por lo tanto imperceptibles para el ojo humano, actúa sobre la naturaleza con las que son sus formas elementales sacando a la luz en cierta manera la esencia interna de todas las cosas. Para dar una dimension temporal a su trabajo aparte de su transitoriedad usa la seriación, otra manera de actuar de la naturaleza, la repetición por patrones como si las obras de arte se pudieran producir a modo de fractales. Description: Ceca Georgieva It snowed over the weekend and of course everyone went out to play and the park was littered with attempts at snowmen, rolling snow balls and all sorts of attempted snow and ice structures from igloos to slides. Someone had even begun ‘planting’ twigs in rows, mimicking the spring growth to come, the snow triggering peoples creativity and need to have inventive fun, especially in a time of lockdown. As I walked back home I was reminded of Andy Goldsworthy, an artist that has taken that spirit of play and elevated it into an art, someone that began their career very locally and who was actually rejected from the foundation course at Leeds and so had to go to Bradford; I’m so glad his early experience of rejection didn’t put him off, I hope it just strengthened his resolve. I see his work as drawing rather than sculpture, but at the end of the day the difference doesn’t really matter. For me, he sees lines and shapes in nature and emphasises these by making them a photographic reality. The image above is actually by the Bulgarian artist Ceca Georgieva, who also uses the things she finds in nature as her drawing materials, in fact I initially made a mistake and thought the work was by Goldsworthy, an issue that is actually very serious, as I do understand the pain of having your own work labelled as someone else’s, so I must apologise. In Georgieva’s work, if you stand in a certain position, you can see two trees that have grown away from each other, so that they can give room for sunlight to illuminate their leaves evenly. This creates two diverging lines, that in turn creates a space between them and she fills that space with snowballs and photographs the result. The process is very straightforward, but at the same time conceptually beautiful. Andy Goldsworthy In the image above Goldsworthy reverses the trick, this time it’s found sticks that fabricate a drawing of wonky geometric forms. There is a playful illusion of three dimensional solidity, an illusion that causes this artwork to hover between being a series of objects and a line drawing. I heard him speak once and it was probably his sense of playfulness that came over most powerfully. Give him some time outside and he will find visual potential in something, all he has to do is move things around a little and he will reveal all sorts of possibilities. In one photograph in particular where he simply throws a few sticks up into the air, you also realise how important the camera is to his work, without it all those decisive moments would go undocumented. So why not just go out and play and take your camera with you just in case. Description: As I noted last week, in David Attenborough’s documentaries, the natural world is teeming, bizarre place of baroque mating rituals, predation, and survival. A more bucolic view of nature is one that looks at the beauty in natural forms and patterns. One of the themes in Zymoglyphic culture is making art from natural objects, often with minimal transformation. Andy Goldsworthy is the purest Western practitioner of the craft of arranging natural materials into art forms. Usually, it is a matter of lightly imposing some human abstraction – a circle, spiral, or an unnatural crack – in a natural landscape to somehow achieve a magical effect. Some of his creations are permanent installations in stone, but most are ephemeral structures of ice, leaves, water, sticks or the crackles in drying mud. For these, his photographs become the final creative product and only remaining evidence of the work. The photographs in turn are available in a series of high-quality books. A good survey is Andy Goldsworthy: A Collaboration with Nature. A lesser-known type of work that he does are “snowball paintings”, which are created by putting a snowball stained with a natural dye on paper and letting it melt. The result is an amazingly detailed pattern created by the way the dye is deposited as the snow melts and the water evaporates. A detail from one is shown here, with an enlargement here. The Zymoglyphic acrylic paintings achieve a similar effect from the deposition patterns of the (unnatural) acrylic pigment. An additional dimension to Goldsworthy’s work is provided in the excellent documentary Rivers & Tides, which shows his work in a context of time and motion that you don’t see as much in the still photographs. A pile of sticks by the shore is demolished bit by bit by the tides; a string of leaves snakes its way lazily down a creek. He has two permanent installations in the Bay Area.
